AFSA VP Ernest Logan Responds to FY 2019 Budget

President Trump's FY 2019 budget proposal was released last week and Ernest Logan, AFSA Executive Vice President, released the following statement:

The FY 2019 budget proposal is the first step toward dismantling public education. It is time to stand up and take action. The future of our schools is at stake.

Not only does the proposed budget cut $2 billion from the teacher and principal professional development program just reauthorized with bipartisan support in Congress, it finds $1 billion in money to create a brand new private school voucher program, which would redistribute increasingly scarce public school dollars to unaccountable private schools.

How do you improve schools when you take money away from training the people who educate the nation's children?

The drastic cuts to education, Medicaid, Social Security and other programs that low-income and middle-class families rely on are hard to comprehend. It is the wrong blueprint for our nation, and will inflict harm on those who need assistance the most.

The principals and other school leaders that make up the American Federation of School Administrators will continue working hard to ensure Congress rejects this proposal, and understands the true investments needed to move our nation forward.
