According to Politico, Sen.Roy Blunt, the Republican chairman of the Senate subcommittee overseeing education funding, said today that many of President Donald Trump's proposed cuts to education programs are "not likely" to clear his panel.
Blunt (R-Mo.) said that while he appreciated some of the administration's proposals to eliminate and consolidate programs at the Education Department, the cutbacks likely won't happen.
"The large formula grant programs are not likely to be eliminated," he said, adding that he is "not likely to support the elimination of Impact Aid," a roughly $1 billion program that provides aid to school districts with large swaths of tax-exempt federal land.
Blunt also singled out the Trump administration's proposed elimination of "small targeted programs like Special Olympics and Arts in Education," which he said would "make a big impact if you eliminate them."
Still, Blunt told Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, who was testifying before his panel, that he agreed with some of her proposals to eliminate and streamline education programs.
"I appreciate the perspective, the new look you've brought to the department," Blunt told DeVos.
