Politico Pro reports, union leaders warned that their members would vote against lawmakers who support Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court, a shot across the bow to red-state Democrats.
"There will be a reaction to that at the ballot box in November," AFSCME President Lee Saunders said on a phone call with reporters.
Officials from the AFL-CIO, AFSCME, SEIU, AFT and NEA voiced their concerns during the press briefing about Kavanaugh's record on worker protections, school choice, and affirmative action. But they stopped short of pledging to campaign against Democrats who ultimately vote for the nominee, saying their members already understand the stakes of the vacant high court seat.
"We don't need another justice who only listens to the whispers of the wealthy few," AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka said.
Sen.Bob Casey(D-Pa.), also on the call, said he would oppose Kavanaugh's nomination in order to prevent a "corporate" takeover of the federal judiciary.
"Now we're supposed to turn over the third branch of government to the corporate right," he said. "I will not be complicit in that."
