Resolution 12 — Creating a Union Veterans Chapter

 WHEREAS, the men and women who bravely served our country in military service deserve the best our nation can provide; and 

WHEREAS, approximately 2.1 million union members, or 15% of all union members, and thousands of retired administrators are veterans of military service; and 

WHEREAS, the AFSA Veterans Chapter is a project of the American Federation of School Administrators; and

WHEREAS, the purpose of the AFSA Veterans Chapter is to bring together union leaders and union members who are veterans to speak out on and add their valued perspective to veterans’ issues and influence public policy to improve the quality of life for U.S. veterans and their families; and

WHEREAS, the AFSA Veterans Chapter will hold government officials, candidates and elected officials accountable to the needs of military veterans and their families in educational career pursuits; and

WHEREAS, the AFSA Veterans Chapter will make our positions on veterans’ issues known to candidates for public office and support the appointment of education-friendly veterans to government agencies at all levels; and

WHEREAS, the AFSA Veterans Chapter also will encourage union veterans to take leadership roles in other veterans’ organizations and will strive to form coalitions and alliances with other veteran groups around administrative union veterans’ issues;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the American Federation of School Administrators and its locals support the establishment of the AFSA Veterans Chapter as an AFSA constituency group organization, and will fully support and assist the activities of the AFSA Veterans Chapter.
