Resolution 4 — Building Worker Power to Enhance Organizing

WHEREAS, for decades, school districts have used tactics to stymie organizing efforts, resulting in stagnant wages, rising inequality, race and gender-based discrimination, a weakened labor movement and a democracy under attack, which makes the promise of union membership for unorganized school leaders an essential priority; and

WHEREAS, school leaders across the nation are experiencing unfair treatment by their school districts, a lack of job security, and understand the need for a real voice and seat at the table; and

WHEREAS, over the last five years, the American Federation of School Administrators has heard from record numbers of school leaders interested in forming a union and joining AFSA, resulting in record growth for the union;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the American Federation of School Administrators will continue to support new and existing locals to gain a greater voice and become organized, and develop a strategy to increase the scale and pace of organizing to make the promise of union membership a reality; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the American Federation of School Administrators will assist locals in joining their local and state labor federations and assist in forging key partnerships with allies (community, environmental, immigrant rights, racial justice, women’s, LGBTQ+, workers’ rights and religious) to find areas of mutual interest and ways that we can support our common goals; and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that the American Federation of School Administrators will continue fighting for state and national legislation to guarantee all public employees who wish to join a union will have the right to do so.
